Illustration Friday - Safari Part II

As extra credit, I thought I'd add this one. It's a bit more crude than the last (sorry), but I thought it humorous. Then again I have a bit of a warped sense of humor.

Illustration Friday - Safari

This week the theme is Safari. Seeing as the only safari I've ever been on was at a zoo, I know little about them. What I do know I learned from cartoons.

So if cartoons didn't lie to me all you need for a safari is a pith helmet, khaki shirt and pants, a ridiculously large mustache, an elephant gun and a supply of martinis...sounds reasonable.

Illustration Friday - Beginning

So this week I thought I'd try something a little different. I did a quick pencil drawing of Eve in the garden, being that the garden of Eden is the story of the beginning of humanity in the Bible.

This story was always interesting to me. The mystery, intrigue, deceit, a talking snake, poisoned fruit and the fall of mankind...it's kind of a long way off from trying to think of something clever to write so you can blog about a drawing you did.

Maybe I'll revisit this one day and do a final painting of it.

Fun and Games

So a while ago, someone sent me some pictures of a sidewalk artist Julian Beever's work. I don't know if you've seen it or not but it's definitly worth Googling him.

Ever since then I've wanted to try this technique myself. So tonight, despite all the other things I probably should have been doing, I tried a small scale drawing. Something simple, something quick.

I think it came out well enough to give it another try...maybe even something over the top.

Armor Up Challenge

These are a couple of illustration I did for a T-shirt competition on a site called Armor Up. It is a Christian T-shirt site that has a weekly challenge where you upload your art and people get to vote on what design they like best. I haven't won yet, but the second design (the Noah design) got printed on a "second chance" run.

The first is pretty self explanatory. It's taken from the book of Matthew and has to do with the parable of the 10 virgins waiting for the bride groom. 5 are wise and brought extra oil, 5 not so much. They went to go buy some and missed the bridegroom and were locked out of the wedding feast.

The second is a superhero logo of sorts for Noah. The challenge was to create a super hero logo for a biblical patriarch. I picked Noah because his was the first one to come to my mind.

Illustration Friday - Lesson

So this week's Illustration Friday topic is Lesson. I immediately thought of my own misconception of parenthood. Before I had children the solutions seemed so simple, or so I thought. Why, if I just explain to them in a clear, concise and logical way they will understand. I thought that logic would win them over and instill in them the ability to reason for themselves... to make good choices.

Once I had children I found that logic doesn't get up with you at 4:00am when the baby is crying, it shrugs it's shoulders when a child is kicking a screaming on the floor, and it takes a vacation when a ball is thrown through a window.

On the occasion that you have the wits about you to think clearly enough to compose a coherent thought, you realize logic must have been derived from Greek because children don't understand it anyway.

Illustration Friday - Bicycle

So here we go again. This week the topic is "bicycle". Having done so many stupid things on a bicycle as a child, I thought it only fitting that I make that the subject for this week.

So maybe I never drove my bike strait up the wall (at least not that I remember), but I've left my share of tire marks, and a trail of destruction wherever I went. I recall having glorious triumphs and spectacular wipeouts. Of the two, the later was most entertaining to my friends.

All in all I'm no worse for the wear...and I got quite a few stories to tell from it.

I Thought since my previous post was about Illustration Friday's topic was "Journey" I would add this sketch.

Before your next road trip, don't forget to fill up with Johnny Fuel!

Illustration Friday - Journey

So this week the topic is "Journey". So in this illustration I decided to go with the ultimate road trip...the motorcycle.

It seems that any trip on a motorcycle is a journey all it's own, especially on those bug filled July nights. If you weren't paying attention you might think it was hail, but it's not... It's bugs... lots and lot of bugs. That's how I learned the importance of a windshield... but I digress.

Random Illustrations

So I recently upgraded my computer, my old G3 served me well may it rest in peace. Since then I've been working on reorganizing my digital life. In doing so I've found some old artwork.

The first was inspired our local art museum's collection of Hindu art. I quite enjoy drawing in the galleries, as a matter of fact I think these museums should be open later if they insist on having such an extensive collection. Just a thought.

This second piece was drawn as part of a concept that I was asked to work on. I did a couple different versions on the same theme, but they didn't pick this one (which was my favorite). It seemed a shame to let the drawing go to waste, so I finished it anyway.

As I come across more I'll post it.

So today I am contributing to the Illustration Friday blog. This is my first entry, but hopefully not my last. The topic is "Bottled". So I thought I'd go with what everybody wants, a miracle product... Liquid Cool!

That's right! a couple of drops and you are irresistible to the person of your dreams, you will have fame fortune and success beyond measure. Hollywood will be beating down your door begging you to star in their next blockbuster hit.
