New Blog Site

Hi Everyone,

I apologize for not keeping up this blog, but I have actually started up a different blog site. It is going to be a bit different in that it will contain a variety of art of different subject matter. If you are interested in checking it out, visit it at http://innermad.blogspot.com/

Organic Dress Form

So it has been quite some time since I last posted anything for Illustration Friday, or anything else. I am trying to challenge myself to start doing some different types of drawing to keep my skills up and expand my skill set.

This week the word of inspiration was "Skull". I took a bit of liberty with that and used more than just the skull, but I think it still meets the criteria.

I sketched this out and added the color in photoshop (just to dress it up a bit more than just a sketch, please excuse the obvious filter in the background).

This is my attempt a social commentary against vanity and self importance. In a way this is how I view the world. In short, no matter how important we are (or think we are), we all share the same fate. We are all like dress forms for an organic hide. There, that should brighten you day.

IF - Sight

This week I tried to think of the topic in an unusual way. I thought of a gun sight, binoculars, telescope...maybe a crystal ball, or something with coke bottle glasses? One thing that came to mind was the loss of, or the restoration of sight. I immediately thought of the bible story of when Jesus gives the blind man his sight.

The reason this stood out to me is, as a general rule we like our medicine to be in neat little pills, or some kind of flavored syrup, all wrapped up in a nice little package ready for use. Every once and a while there is cause for remedies that are a little less desirable, maybe even disturbing. Blood letting from primitive cultures, maggots to clean wounds, peeing on your friends leg when they get stung by a jellyfish.

I place the story of the blind man in the undesirable category. Not that I think remaining in his current condition would be better, but it's still kind of gross to have someone rubbing their saliva into your eyes. Let's face it, if I was stung by a jellyfish I too would be looking for someone to help take away the pain (providing I couldn't do it myself). but I don't have to like it.

Illustration Friday - Kernel

So this weeks Illustration Friday topic is "kernel". I started think about it and went on a bit of a tangent. My original thought was that of a military commander, then soon realized that was the wrong spelling (colonel). So I began again.

I am a bit of a tech kind of guy, so the next thing that came to mind was "kernel panic". I remember the days of booting up my Mac and getting the error that my machine couldn't start up due to "Kernel Panic", so it would assume the position of a really expensive brick for a while. If you're really interested in learning more about it, here's the link to Apple's tech page http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742

The idea of a person frustrated or yelling at their computer has been done many times, and probably better than what I could do, so I thought I'd try something a little different. I went with something that I quite enjoy, but makes others groan... the pun.

IF - Vocal

So I've been away a long time, but I wanted to get back to contributing to Illustration Friday.

The word "vocal" triggers my mind to think of singing. I quite enjoy listening to a performer with a pleasant voice singing in a style that I normally associate with. When I'm in my car listening to the radio, I might even be inclined to sing along.

Then (maybe after hearing myself sing) I think of all those who have no business singing with-in a 50 foot radius of another living being.

So the sketch here is representative of the later rather than the former, as I thought it would be more entertaining. If I get the chance to, I may rework the composition and actually paint it.

Illustration Friday - Safari Part II

As extra credit, I thought I'd add this one. It's a bit more crude than the last (sorry), but I thought it humorous. Then again I have a bit of a warped sense of humor.

Illustration Friday - Safari

This week the theme is Safari. Seeing as the only safari I've ever been on was at a zoo, I know little about them. What I do know I learned from cartoons.

So if cartoons didn't lie to me all you need for a safari is a pith helmet, khaki shirt and pants, a ridiculously large mustache, an elephant gun and a supply of martinis...sounds reasonable.
